Anyone using GCR with their color copier or digital press? Or is GCR mainly for offset?

    Gcr

You need to think about what GCR is.
GRC is basically laying down cyan magenta and yellow to make grey
every digital machine needs to do this.

If you make grey from black only, you would get what looks like a handfull of pepper on the paper. To create a smooth grey not a speckled grey you need GRC.

On a press it is the same with printing with a cmyk work flow the only time this doesn't need to apply is with spot colours.

Do a little research on GRC and URC photoshop shows how it works in the colour settings menu.

The way I understand gray component replacment is that black is used more and cyan magenta and yellow less. The goal is a net reduction in the ink used to make the same color.

With color copiers color toner is more expensive than black toner, so I wondered if anyone uses GCR to use more black toner and less color toner to make color images on digital?

YES in the shadows and hi ink density areas but if you take away GCR, you will compromise on quality in the highlights and midtones as I explained earlier.
