    Since I’ve worked almost exclusively on Komori presses, I always assumed that a “P” or paper detector was necessary. A colleague has raised doubt as to it’s necessity because other brands of presses use the front lay detectors to start the impression sequence and to trip the press after the last sheet.

    Can anyone explain the purpose of the “P” detector?

    I mean the "P" or paper detector on the register plate just before the front lay. It's found on Komori presses from the Kony through the Sprint 25 through the Lithrone series and can cause great confusion when not working properly.

    The "P" or "Impression" sensor performs several functions, depending on the age of the press. Also on most Komori's it is adjustable as quite often it needs to see a printed sheet.It provides a signal for automatic impression on and off. It will not allow the feeder to start if it sees a sheet left on the feed board, on most Komori's.

    On the newer presses, last ten years or so, it is tied into the sheet jam or sheet stream circuitry. Basically the press counts the sheets coming down the feedboard and expects them to reach the "P" sensor by usually around 8 sheets or it trips the feeder.

    I had the idea...

    I was asking about the "light" , as i so not know any light / lamp / indication called"P" on Komories.
    As for the inpression on sensor , i know them on all Komori presses - never had one without it - maybe did not have them as old as some others :)

    @presselectronics.
    Thank you for your clear explanation. I understand now that if the feeder has tripped because of a late or crooked sheet and if the feeder is started again without clearing the feed board, the feeder tapes will start moving at 200 degrees and there may be a second sheet at the headstops by the time the Eyekom does it’s inspection at 285 or 295 degrees which would cause another trip.

    Or worse, the second sheet could cause the first sheet to wrinkle and damage the blankets when the swing gripper grips the sheet at 0 degrees. Also if the second sheet reaches the headstops after the Eyekom inspection, the press could take the two sheets resulting in much consternation and foul language.

    I had always taken this for granted, but did not fully understand the logic.
