What is the fastest way to determine the dpi resolution of bitmaps in a PDF file you are given?

I don't know of a PDF reader that displays this information.

You can import the PDF into indesign or coreldraw and look at the bitmap resolution there one by one for each image.

I would also like to know if anyone has a one-step method to display the bitmap resolution for bitmaps in a PDF file you are given, other than plain-old visual inspection (good enough, not good enough.) It would be handy when given a PDF to open for a quick check and immediately tell customer if any bitmap is not optimal resolution.

Enfocus PitStop (a plug-in app for Acrobat) has a tool Inspector that gives you stats on not only resolution, but color space, text used, colors, color conversions, and so on. I have found it to be the best all-around PDF editor and for that reason as well as many many others.
It is not cheap, but it will pay for itself 100 times over in six months of use.

I second the Enfocus PitStop suggestion! It is such a powerful plug-in for Acrobat Pro. There's probably a good tutorial online somewhere too.

if you don't have pitstop but have acrobat pro and photoshop just right click on the image and select edit image. this will open the image in photoshop and you can check the resolution there.

easiest way? Do you have a lot of these files?

No? I will second PitStop Professional as the best option. Next to using the inspector when selecting objects you also have the option the preflighting and get loads of info about your images.

Yes? Why not take a look at PitStop Server 'www.enfocus.com'? Same capabilities, but works in batch process and can generate e-mails with the results attached.

You also have preflighting functionality in Acrobat that could trigger the bitmap resolution and provide you with results.

    Cheers,
    Bert

    Hi Jeff,

With professional acrobat and third party plug-in will support the function for you to determine the dpi of the images. I am glad I had a good time working with nice boss for various printing company from design to graphic pre-press and I experience that issue is not easy to handle when the file are in the processing for output.

Pitstop all the way. Comes in very useful, not only for checking resolution but also for things like text edits within Acrobat.
