Hey Bean - Lots of possibilities, but not knowing what exactly you mean by play up, I would take a look at the forward and reverse motor contactor, possibly loose wires at the coils and not pulling in when they should, or possibly the forward motion relay (d6??) coil or contact points. Does the motor sound like it's struggling when you're having issues (single phasing)? If so, contact points at the main motor contactor may be degrading. Is the problem at forward motion/run only, or does reverese give you crap also? Good Luck Steve

Sorry I was a bit vague.the press will run then come to an abrupt halt then I have problems getting the press to run again.the press seems to apply the brake for no reason .I have to turn the press off then on again.

bean - if it is the brake that is causing this, it may be that the brake discs are worn to the point that the switch is not being fully made or even backing off while running (heat issue), this would cause the press to come to a stop. Next time it stops, pull the brake handle towards you (making the brake switch) and inch/run the press and see if the problem clears. If it does, you could adjust the switch a bit, but I would be concerned about the condition of the brake. Good Luck

bean - what model year is this press? To my knowledge, there has never been a board in the braking circuit of the GTO line of presses. It is likely the brake relay is failing, you will likely notice a considerable amount of carbon buildup under and within the relay if this is the case. Blue wires are DC, and even if you don't notice the carbon deposits, it would be wise to have your electrician ohm out the suspect relay. Good Luck

I had a similar problem years ago with an old Rotaprint. It would just cut out without rhyme or reason. Several people came and looked and went away defeated. eventually I found a fuse holder in the main box of electronics had cracked and the vibration of the press was causing a break in the circuit which would often sort itself out once the press had stopped. Cost 15p to fix.
