In my mind, cheap labor is only justified if the standards of living dictate it. But from what I see, cheap labor in China is borne out of necessity. These people do not have jobs, so they get exploited. From what I know they are paid lower than the cost of living.

And I do support the move to keep businesses here.

I dont know about you but business has more factors to it then just profits to some. Its called not selling out. In the USA I know I learned a little something about ethics and nationalism. Moving our capital equipment and labor force to China for a cheaper buck isn't my idea of making money. Also Im a business owner and operator. I don't need to middle man to make money. Also people don't always buy cheap, some are willing to pay for value. Politics plays a major role in business. Politics affects the way people do business, example tax laws and environmental regulations. So thats my two cents.

I see the point of both views. Though outsourcing may kill local employment it could also be the one that can save it. I have been in this industry for years now and I am planning to go about offering my services for outsourcing. I believe the feasibility (cost/effort/margin of error) may be quite difficult in outsourcing all printing needs but if you go about outsourcing a portion of the printing process you would be able to keep jobs locally and also cut down on cost. If anyone out there wants to partner in providing me your pre press work it would be a win win situation. We may even start a partnership!

One big thing that bothers me as a printer is that if I outsource a big job to China, a noticeable amount of dollars go to shipping to air freight proofs and advance copies and ship the finished product across the planet instead of that money going to pressmen (wherever they are printing for local customers)

Pure politics - probably not, but it is that particular politics that keeps us in business. We really should keep business locally as much as we can but away ( I am afraid to start another debate here) from unions. Whatever industry is dead here in USA is in big part because of them.

Sorry, you're wrong. Name one American town that has been "saved" by outsourcing.

I have actually pushed every possible lever to keep a 200,000 business cards order printed in USA and made it happen. Made very little off it but preventing it from being sent to overseas production made me feel much better than money.

People and Countries really need to take note at what outsourcing does to their own economy. The 'must have' and 'cheap' culture needs to slow down, so that countries like china dont flood the world and kill it.

As a Chinese printer .I don`t think lower labor will be as our advantage for longer ,I have discuss withe salary with my customer ,many of them talk about the Vietnam and some other south Asia country printing cost will be lower than us

but business relationship is not just base on the lower cost .good service /better quality/well-communication ad soon on must have their effection .

here I hope my counterpart do not always shouting we are cheapest ,we are lowest .it is not a good way to get busniess

I have mixed feelings about working with Chinese factories. However, I have over 10 years of experiences working with asian factories for printing and I must say printing in South Korea may be the best alternative to print at affordable cost but they offer premium quality services. Buying local does not always equal good quality. I've seen some places with extreme high cost with okay quality of printing services.
