We bought the Heidelberg QM DI 46-4 press at auction and somehow they lost the RIP.
We bought the Delta 7.5 RIP software and a computer to install it on so I then Installed Windows 2000 server and made sure the name was set to QM_RIP1. Try as I might, I cannot get the RIP to talk to the DI press. Originally the RIP software set the output directory to D:/Output/Unskewed. I connected it up with a crossover cable. (I went and bought a new one) checked the settings on the DI Press which had F://QM_RIP1/Bitmap mentioned as the share. I changed the output directory to D:/Bitmap/Unskewed on the RIP to suit the DI, Shared it in Win2k and it wouldn't see it still. I noticed that it mentioned the network service NETBEUI so I installed that on the RIP. Now the DI press only gets as far as the Blue screen with blinking curser. I checked the network connection and there were packets to and from the DI (which I thought was promising) but it won't get past the blue screen.
I cannot understand why it would be so difficult to connect to the press when the software is so expensive, surely it should be automatic.

I have looked at the other posts in this forum about this problem and still cannot sort it out. Do I have to setup an autoexec.bat file on the Win 2k Server dos sharing the Bitmap directory using net share?
I'm sure I'm missing something simple. I'm positive that along with the brain cells I've killed over the years. I've forgotten more DOS than I've lost hair.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Basically the QMDI only looks for files in one place the mapped drive F:

By default the path to the mapped drive is \\QM_RIP1\BITMAP

So your computer name needs to be named QM_RIP1 and you must have a shared folder called BITMAP

Within the folder BITMAP there should be a sub folder called UNSKEWED.

So you should end up with all your ripped files in the shared folder \\QM_RIP1\BITMAP\UNSKEWED

Make sure the folder your outputting to "D:/Bitmap/" is shared with the file name BITMAP

As far as I remeber you can also use the dos command (from the QMDI)

Press Alt + X on your keyboard to view dos
NET VIEW \\QM_RIP1 to see if you can view the shared files from the QM_RIP

Also from another computer in your workgroup make sure your shared files don't require a password to access.

I know most of what I have typed is what you have already done but please check over it again as the setup is usually fairly straight forward

    Hope this helps
    Andy

If whats mentioned above fails you can check that the previous owner hadn't a differen't share or computer name.

You can view the mapped network drive by viewing or editing the file

    C:\MS-NET\STARTNET.BAT

Again you must press ALT + X on a keyboard connected to the DI to view dos

Another thing which has just popped into my head, you said you where configuring the Harlequin RIP yourself.

I believe you need to output all ripped files as 1Bit Tiff files and the file extensions:
.BLK, .CYN, .MAG, .YEL, .INK (I don't know if this is essential but its the default file extensions that came with my press someone else might shed more light.)

Thanks guys for the fast replies but I have been through all the steps mentioned. Maybe someone can send me a copy of the contents of their startnet.bat file in case the previous owner has modified it. There are 3 lines (all the same) with the command to share the f: drive. Seems odd to me.

Thank heaps there MightyAndy. That looks exactly the same as mine from memory but I'll print and check it against my QM. Seems odd to have 3 lines with the same command. What's the old saying "three time is the trick"

    1. Try uninstalling and reinstalling NETBEUI.
    2. Try to map out to the D:\Output\Unskewed folder. Output should be shared within windows as BITMAP. Share out unskewed as unskewed.
    3. Most DI RIPs are configured to share out the D: drive and not the F: drive. You may need to change the CD-ROM / DVD-ROM drive to a different letter under Disk Manager in the Windows Computer Management window.

If none of these resolve the issue we cannot support the Meta RIP but if you want to purchase a used v.5.3 Harlequin RIP with a new Dual-Core computer we have one available and can guarantee it will connect and output to the DI press. We also sell new v.8.3 RIPs for the DI presses. Visit the following page for more information:

Drive F: refers to a mapped network drive on the QMDI not a physical drive.

So there is no need to change any drive letters.

yes, you are. it's in DOS.

I suggest that you going to Win XP (if possible).

I had the same problem with Win2000 and RIP+Press connection.
My startnet.bat now looks exactly like this:

    net stop /yes
    net start basic /verbose /yes
    net logoff
    net logon QM_PRESS1 /savepw:yes /yes
    net use /persistent:clear /yes
    net use f: \\QM_RIP1\BITMAP persistent:no

    And this is it.

If you leave ">>c:\ms-net\startnet.log" in each line of startnet.bat this will cause that your computer will stop with blue screen and blinking cursor. Why? Because output is forwarded to this file (startnet.log) and not to your monitor but computer expect username and password (which you must type to login to Rip computer) to make connection to RIP computer and because that - all is stopped (computer waiting for input and can't go further). Try remove those ">>c:\ms-net\startnet.log" and see what will happend. Before that, you must in Win2000 go to Control Panel, Users and Administrators and set password for user QM_PRESS1 which you will use when logging press to Rip. Also, set QM_PRESS1 as "administrator" (tab Group Membership).
    And this is it.
Sometimes it is happend to me that Win2000 will not accept QM_PRESS1 when i trying to logon. It's some bug in Windows. Usually it happens when using some noname USB sticks. In this case i create new user, new password and on press loging with that new set and again working fine.
If you resolve your problem now you will pay a coffe :)

Please write a word if this helps you.

PS. you must have keyboard connected to press PC computer.

    We got it working eventually

I got it working. It was nothing to do with the DOS setup. In the Win 2000 computer, in the permissions section of the users file for the QM-DI Press there is a checkbox which ask the user to change the password each time it logs on. Doh!

Just a quick note: I got the same issue yesterday and I have to create a user in the Win NT4 server as QM_PRESS1 and assign the permissions to the BITMAP share. I was able to connect and view the server from DI DOS c:\net view \\QM_RIP1 and see all the shares on the Win NT4 from the DI DOS computers.
