Hey Tim,
I do some rep work for Lithec here in the states as an independent. I also worked at KBA for quite some time. Give me a call and I can surely assist. Doug @ 563-249-3252
The biggest differences are the electrical system, electronics and operating system. Mechanically there are few big differences but the gripper system is slightly different by both are rock solid. The feeder head changed as well. Operator controls streamlines but control basically the same...
It depends on the application. Extremely short runs will benefit less than long runs. Single shift operations will benefit less than mutliple shift operations.
They all work well and certainly work better than manual operator settings / adjustments.
There are after market systems available...
Here is my take on the question:
The main advantage of an anilox coater is that there is no way to change the amount of coating being applied. The main disadvantage is that there is no way to change to amount of coating being applied.
Consistency of gloss and rub are the results of the lack...
The picture showing the Ra 104 and year 1996 looks like an electrical control cabinet. It doesn't relate to the machine. It is hard to tell much from the one picture of the press but it appears to be an Ra 105. I find it VERY hard to believe that any KBA representative can't tell you the year...
The Ra 105 started in 1998. For sure no exceptions. In 1996 there was the Ra 104 only, no exceptions. It is HIGHLY doubtful that any parts were used between the two as the Ra 105 was a mostly different design. The electronics are completely different. The Ra 105 will use ABB components...

I think the press of choice does vary considerably depending on which country or even which part of a country.
In the US for the most part, MAN Roland has been plagued by some large reliability issues going back to the disaster with the fiber optic rollout 20 years ago. They are a well built...
The CD would be required for your use. The Komori should be able to handle the thicker stock with fewer issues. Just makesu re any machine you are considering is capable of thicker material and is so equipped.
This should get you close. As long as the required gripper setting adjustments are made, there should be no problem with print quality. It is possible that the cylinder gear mesh will alter the print quality somewhat.
