What is the best/safest way to clean ink build up? There is a thick layer in front of the ink keys on all of the units.

what do you mean by ink buildup? Is the ink drying/ solidifying? ( maybe stir it occasionally)?

The only real way is to scrape it off but when you get near the metal be careful because if you score across them they won’t slide against each other. After scraping most of it off use scotchbrite and acetone to finish it off. Pack the front of the keys with grease to stop it happening again.

I've found Zip Strip to work well on old ink buildup, then once you've got all the fountains really clean you need to keep them that way by changing your wash-up routine.

Unfortunately, the best way is not always the safest. If you are mechanically inclined, the best way is to tear down the well, clean each key - individually - and then put it back together again. It can be a little daunting the first time, to say the least, but not all that big of a deal after you've done it and know what you're doing. The good news is that if done correctly, the ink well will perform like new again.
