Can anyone let me know why the Heidelberg SM 74 5H DI presses are not perceived to be as good as a standard SM 74 5H. Also if there is anyway to overcome the perceived and/or real issues with the press.

    Hi sir
Please explain what do you mean.
Heidelberg always has been Excelent Reputation.
For remember to you, when Man Roland in decade 60's , was in the 1 first grade in Offset Tech
Heidelberg did take the 1 first premiun with Rotaspeed, and then was going On.
as the first Factory as the number 1 in the trade: as Letterpress+ Offset.
I did remember, when Roland, was a Hit, with Favorit, BUT when Heidelberg, coming with the 1 first Offset Press
as a Success in the World.
In my country Nicaragua C.A. , that i was Exclusive Representative for Heidelberg+Polar by Over 62 year ago( Business that my
father q.e.p.d was did) was a success ,I must point Out , tha we was representative from Roland because Heidelberg was only success in Letterpress machine, BUT all was change it!!! .

Then my brother in I am as Eng P.E, we continuously until the 2003.

In short, Heidelberg had been The best reputation by many reason: 1)German Engineering 2) Precission 3) Reputation 4) Network 5) Assistance 6) Service, and going On.
However the tech had been going On, and you must remember ANY business: goes : Cost vs Profit.

Thanks very much. We sent you some details via email. Does the user have to buy specific plates from Heidelberg for DI process or can they purchase after market plates?

In my opinion, DI technology itself is a let down. Otherwise SM74 is a good press.

DI has more of cons than pros
    cons:
high cost of consumables -plates/inks/deletion pens-
2 suppliers of plates by Presstek and Toray only -as far as i know-
ambient temperature must be maintained at all costs as well rollers, must be maintained and checked regularly to be in top shape
all powder and paper dust stick on plates, ergo hickeys and more blanket washes -unless you reserve one tower for dusting sheets-
high tack of inks thus losing trapping and occasionaly see some mottling
    sluggish use of ink levels

    pros
    fast drying of inks
    low dot gain
    clear and crisp dot
no distortion of paper due lack of water
ecological since the use of chemicals is almost non existant
plates only need wash with roller wash and stored as is
can achieve higher screenings -300 lpi- havent tried stochastic yet
ph balance/conductivity/IPA use etc is not an issue anymore
more stable ink feed than conventional

Hi Mantman, I think you mixed up DI with Anicolor.
DI is not a water less technology. Only Plate imaging is done on press. Rest of the press is same as conventional.

Some Copy/Paste from a web page.
SM74-DI's printing units are served by its own Creo-Scitex imaging head. Plates are loaded with Autoplate. All units are imaged simultaneously, in register, in three minutes, according to Heidelberg. As a result, the entire plate loading and imaging process can be accomplished in eight minutes, direct from a RIP with no additional prepress work.

Inking is preset using RIPed data via Heidelberg's InterTech award-winning CPC 32 press control system. This press control system provides accurate profiles that reduce waste and control makeready times.

The GTO i print now is DI -its written on the cover Heidelberg Direct Image technology- though it was an earlier model of DI technology.
There is a Technotrans chiller for the oscillators and CPC 1.02 with a computer for imaging and the lasers present of course where the dampening system should be as for the rest is a classical Heidi GTO

It uses a reflex sensor and an amplifier module.
