    hello to everyone,

    at first of all sorry for my bad english. i'm a graphic designer from portugal and i'm searching for a laser printer. last saturday, i was looking to a xerox phaser 7760dn printer with only 16200 prints. the machine look like new, but after some test prints i saw a light gray background on non printed area, from edge to edge. it seems like 2% ou 3% from K..

    i hope that my pics can give you an idea about this problem and if it is easy to fix it, cause i would like to buy this printer...

    thanks @ all

    Well, I guess I will never get tired to say this - you are in wrong forum to request help for this kind of problem. This is a forum mostly of print industry professionals not a printer professionals as of printer technicians... In Any case, what you showed and described could be from a number of reasons which will be hard to determine without knowing a history of this unit. It could be a bad drum unit - but 16K pages is too early for it to be worn.
    It could come from developer/developer unit but once again - it is way too early for them to fail. It could be from defect in High Voltage unit.
    It could be triggered by dirty power i.e. electricity supplied is bad/unstable/too much of interference - from electrical heaters for example.
    It could be because some cheap or not very smart person put a improper toner in it but without knowing the history of the device - it will hard to determine. so pick one....
    I, personally, would go with last one as printer with 16K on the meter, possibly but not likely have the set of other problems.
    Is it safe to buy that printer? Hmmmm, depends on the price. The thing is - bad toner goes inside of the Developer unit and gets mixed with the developer.... So, you could buy original toner, install it and run few hundred pages if it goes away - good for you, if does not - you're looking at hefty service invoice because the developer that will need to be changed is burried deep inside of that printer - takes some time to dig it out and put it back in...
    Good luck.

    Don't get attached to it before you buy it! Tell the seller if he can fix this issue, you are interested. Otherwise keep looking.

    How much are you really going to save over buying new which comes with all new developer, full toners, and all other parts new?

    Uhm-m-m A little correction please - comes with starter toners that are about 25% full (such a cheap trick) but good point.

    sorry UnlimitedBT... thanks for your advice. this machine has always a xerox assistant and a pagepack.. i think the black toner is still the first one.it has always oem toners as well.

    @xfactor printing,
    yes i starting to think the same.. maybe if i choice a new printer, as a phaser 7800dn, maybe i would be better served. xerox make me an offer of +/-115€ per mounth for the renting (5 years) with assistance, toners, etc.. and the click the offer me for black 0.0116€ and color 0.1035€. all price are without vat (23% in portgual).

    honestly i think that's a better option than the used phaser 7760dn.

    i want to start a small light production with this printer to make business cards as flyer, etc. and this class printer i think is for me the best solution for the money i can spend now.
