DC 242/52/60 spotting problem - Mohawk papers

    Hello All.

I run multiple 242s for heavy graphic coverage applications. 90% + 11x17 or 12x18 duplex.

After running more than 750K prints on Mohawk Color Copy 98 60# cover stock, we began seeing really bad toner splotches and spots on our prints - regardless of the paper used. Xerox and I chased the issue for 3 months. In the end, Xerox replaced my machines with brand new ones at no charge. After 15K prints, the spots came back. The only thing left to consider is that the paper is contaminating the machines, and once it happens - EVERYTHING must be cleaned and replaced.

Last week my new machines had completely new developer housings, drums, toner, belts etc. installed - after less than 20k prints.

So - HERE IS THE QUESTION:

Who is running Mohawk Color Copy or Mohawk Navajo - are you seeing toner spots, and if so what weight is the paper you are running. We have over 1 million sheets of this printed, and the spots started last fall. FYI - this is a dramatic splotchy thing - no the occasional spot.

    Thanks for any info!

    Edition One Studios.

Interesting -- I am replying to this thread primarily to keep track of the thread myself. We have run probably 40,000 sheets of Mohawk 32#/80# 12x18 color copy paper through our canon color imagerunners because it was my favorite for that canon satin finish toner. But we haven't run it much on our docucolor 242 yet. I don't have a good grasp of the docucolor's developer system (anyone have a diagram?). I like the Mohawk paper itself quite a bit though so please keep us updated and I will be watching this thread before I plan to run a great deal on the docucolor! I noticed another thread here where someone mentioned having to have major maintenance done on their machine because of a contaminated run of sterling ultra gloss stock.

A bit of an update for those following:

Though we have not tried the Mohawk Color Copy 98 again yet, we have tried a variety of sheets, and put another 20K color clicks on the machines in the last few days.

Our current thinking is that the spotting issue - which was / is really bad - is caused by Mohawk Navajo. Specifically the 60# cover. We ran this in both of the machines that went bad just before the problem started. In both cases, the paper was custom cut to an odd size - 19 x 11. This means that it was taken from a parent sheet, and did not have the iTone coating on it. We are pretty sure anyone running 240/50/42/52/60 machines should avoid this paper.

I would love to hear peoples opinions / experiences on Mohawk's iTone coating as it relates to the Docucolor machines.
