We have been using our own e-commerce solution for digital printing some time now (and we are currently developing a refreshed version) but we would really like to adapt a web2print system. Has anyone tried PrintSites.com or Printinginabox.com? Or maybe have some recommendations relevant for 2014?

We use digital printers including the Ricoh 901C, Canon Imagepress and Xerox 700 all using EFI's Fiery system.

You can also take a look at PrintAgile's Web To Print Software
They have multiple options and a very user friendly designer.

One of the major drawbacks that print owners face while trying out a web to print solution is the ability to customize at will. Coming to the software as a solution, most customers face the problem while availing a SaaS program because that does not allow them to customize their products at will or at ease. When the same thing happens to the end user that is the time when print shops feel the pinch. Web to print solutions necessarily are not as popular as SaaS-based but they do provide some kind of autonomy on the product. One of the major benefits of a Web to Print is, that you can easily have the control over the product and let your customers design at their own will.

The easiness of a SaaS lies in its usage. It is cloud-hosted so you don't need to have a server, but one of the major drawbacks is that the support is not up to the limit. Go for web to print if you want to see an upsurge in your print business.
