Default Dot Gain

Dot Gain is the phenomenon of halftone dots printing larger on paper than they are the plates, lowering contrast and reducing detail. Dot gain is obviously higher on more absorbent, uncoated paper stock, and especially on highly-absorbent stock such as newsprint.

Dot Gain is also termed press gain, dot growth, or dot spread.
