I was helping a client coordinate the printing of their project with a printer. Got a call from the printer, and says there's something wrong with several pages in the PDF. He says there are some sort of stains that appear on the upper part of the page. The page mainly consists of a full bleed photo of a plate of food, with the background going from grey to white at the top.

He says there's dirt, or stains or pixelation appearing on the top right of the negative. So I check in PS, ID, in acrobat as well. It's all clear.

What could have caused this to appear in the negative? A digital proof was also provided and it's also clear. I'm sort of thinking it's in the process of how they make the negatives or the plate but I'm not so sure.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If its in the negative, his developer, fixer or both need to be changed/replenished, depending upon the method being used.

Yes it's in the negative. Would it help if I increase brightness to the gradient? Or is the only way to fix it is through what you mentioned?

    Thanks.

You have to fix the process, basically your negative is made correctly, but during processing it becomes damaged. Therefore, there is nothing you can do electronically because its already right.
