    Hello :)

I have some vocational coursework to undertake and while I am doing well through most of it I have been posed this question:

"List some of the faults that occur in paper manufacture that would affect press performance".

The press in question is a newspaper press. Now I understand how a baggy edge on a reel or linting would effect the run and other things, but what I don't know is the manufacturing faults that would cause these problems. I have tried various internet searches for this but I am not really finding anything.

Would anyone mind pointing me in the right direction please?

    Thank you :)

    Hi Gaz,

for a newby this question is tricky, but one important point is paper quality. For a highspeed webpress paperrolls must be excellent - right humidity and temperature ( not from truck to press ) no damages, and if recycling materials are used, the optimal mixture of waste paper and additives are important.
My own experience from early 90th: papermill Schwedt / Germany got new owner from Bavaria, they started production of recycling paper and had massive problems to get the right mixture. We took rolls in our web and chucked out after minutes, because it ripped off imidiately.

    good luck

    Thanks.

I managed to find out most of the problems stem from winding and/or calendering of the paper.

Thank you for your help though! :)
