    Toning

I have been running my first komori for the past 5 months.. im coming from man rolands and heidelbergs. This press is 1988 komori lithrone 6 color 26". I only had a couple days of training on the press and the previous operator told me that he was having a issue with the black toning up usually only on the first job of the day. So he would just turn the water speed up and the back down as the day went on. After taking over i was able to find a good medium to where only the first 5 sheets would be a little toned up, no big deal. Gradually it got worse and didnt help that the shop failed to supply me with metering roller cleaner for a month. It finally got to the point to where i could not run a job. At that point, still with no MRC, I took the #6 unit metering roller and swapped it. It was like night and day difference with no toning at all. However, that only worked for a couple days and now im back to the toning. I havent checked the stripes yet, but im guessing its going to be a water form. I just find its wierd that with the new metering roller worked great for 2 days... any suggestions?

Where is the toning on the sheet? gripper edge, middle of the sheet , one side?

The starting stripe for the damps are 4mm.
For the metering to chrome pan roller is 3 to 4 clicks after the water disappears.

What do you use to clean the metering rollers with?

I had this, try changing the ink, or as i found out after weeks of pulling my hair out, change the font maybe its to acidic for that colour only. it may be the same make ink, but the colour pigment plays an important part in my book.

Its always at the gripper edge and works its way to the tail.. always in the same spot. I just think its pretty wierd the the new metering roller worked great for 2 days then back to toning.. I just drained my water tank today so i can start with new water on monday. Also brought home with komori book to read up on the water forms to possibly make adjustments on monday if needed.

When your dampners are on while press is idleling does the pan roller turn smoothly or does it look like its sputtering. Cause i had a similar issue and my stripes were set correctly come to find out that my pan roller was skipping. Found out that it was belt driven and the teeth on the belt were tearing off.

I think i would have noticed the skipping, but i will have take a second look. Where can i access the belt to take a look at that too? Im assuming the gear side of the unit..

Last I knew there is no belt that for the dampening unit. There should be a spur gears for the metering & pan roller and a motor geared to the pan roller. The chrome oscillator roller is geared to the press, deprnding on the year the water form may or may not be geared to the press. You should have a copper rider roller on top of the water form that should oscillate. That roller should be set very light to the water form. I'd check the metering to oscillator setting, since this dampener has a reverse slip-nip, it's very sensitive to mis-adjustments. Any pitted or swelled rollers should be replaced. Good luck.....

I believe Komori used belt drive on some presses but went back to gear drive. Also, a faulty water motor encoder or drive can cause chattering of the pan roller.

    Dear USA PRESSMEN,
As Danakomori I would not bother taking time to look for a belt drive on your dampers. I think by the sound of things you know what you are doing. I would suggest that you dont have one main problem but probably a few.
You will have to go back to basics. Drop tank check fount,Alchol,Tempreture. Take pan roller out clean pan.Check all roller settings making sure not to set the form roller to plate too hard (if you do it will take the drive from the press not dampers causing you problems)As you have said you waited for a month for meter roller cleaner but you firm where happy to invest all that money on a press I see it every day people think presses run forever without any service time or future investment.
    Good luck mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok it appears to spin fine. I checked the stripes this morning starting with the metering and working my way to the form. The water form was the only one that was pretty screwy. The operator side was about a 7mm and the gear side was about a 4mm and it went down to a 1 1/2mm in the middle.. Because my shop is so cheap, I had to swap forms out of my #6 unit. Its basically only used for flood varnishing anyways. I set the new/used form at 4mm and appears to be working out pretty good, but wont know for sure untill i run a job with more black ink. Im on a two color job for the next couple days that has very little black ink... However I did have to bring my water motor speed way down and tighten both sides of the metering roller one click each so I guess that a good sign.
