Just got a HP Photosmart pro B8850, it uses the HP38 cartridges, I want a to get a CISS for it, however the refill inks I was able to find seem to be expensive or universals from china. I was able to find a compatiable 8 color set on eBay for a Canon system (I heard somewhere that Canon manufactures HP's ink) however the inks have different names:

    HP's names:

    matte black
    photo black
    light gray
    cyan
    magenta
    yellow
    light cyan
    light magenta

    Canon's names:

    Black
    Cyan
    Magenta
    Yellow
    Photo Magenta
    Photo Cyan
    Grey
    Photo Grey

So there are black, photo black, and grey. Do you think the Canon inks will be compatiable? I don't need super quality, I prefer dye over pigment.

No, you should assume canon inks will not work in the hp unless you have good information to the contrary.

Even one hp model ink doesn't work with another hp printer.

Inkjet nozzles are picky about the right ink. The wrong ink will probably create frequent clogs, or bleeding, or other issues.
