paper for printing maps

I am thinking of buying either an HP DesignJet 2500cp or HP DesignJet 3800cp to print maps. The maps are used outdoors and will be exposed to some sunlight. The maps will get folded many times and they will sometimes get damp.
I am thinking that I need to use UV (pigment?) inks, is that correct?

Would a Tyvek type paper be the best choice, or is there a better paper for this type of map?

Will this work or should I not invest in buying a large format printer, UV inks, paper, etc. I don't want to waste the time and money if the maps will be blurry or the ink won't stand up to being folded and sunlight and damp, etc. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

 

Have you already sourced an HP Designjet compatible tyvek that you plan to print on?

The media that works best with inkjets is limited. I've had some unexpected things happen using non HP media over the years... with the cost of each roll it does add up some to get rolls to test but sometimes a sample roll with 10' or so of media is offered and it's worth it to test first.

Sunlight Fading will be more of an issue if the map is hung on a wall without glass; I'd worry less about that if the concern is maps in use primarily folded. Maybe a panel would fade if the map is left folded open on a dashboard. My main concern would be the durability of the media to be able to fold easily and also not crack over time where folded. And my main concern would be to have very good ink adherence to the durable paper you want.

 

I have not sourced any media yet. I found a company that is going to send some Tyvek samples.

I really appreciate the info about sunlight fading. I think I can save a lot of money and lower the cost per map if I don't need to use UV inks.

Tyvek claims "won't wear out when folded and unfolded. Highly printable, holds topographic details."
