Hi, I have recently finished my apprenticeship and I will be working on SM 74 soon so I have a series of questions. I'm gonna start with this one:
can anyone please explain the Vario dampening? Is it an extra roller in the dampening system called Vario roller that moves like an oscillator(left-right motion) and you can activate/deactivate it? if so when is it best to use this feature?
    greatly appreciate any assistance.

It's a dampening forme roller that runs slower in respect to the roller train and it's used to pick off hickeys from the plate.

the roller you are referring to that oscillates side to side is the Z roller, or bridge roller. I usually like to keep the bridge roller integrated to the inker under most running conditions. Separating the inker from the dampener is indicated for very light coverage jobs, and when printing with metallic inks. You will find that less startup sheets are thrown away when running with the bridge roller engaged.
As mentioned by Gooner the vario option changes the speed of the water form to wipe hickeys off the plate. This wiping action will wear both the roller and plates out prematurely if always used. I would suggest you save the vario option for when you need it.

Hi turbotom, I'm new on the forum and I have some question to ask, by experience, when is it better to use vario? Will excessive use harm the dampening form roller, what is the main function of the vario, does it only remove hickeys on plate and that
    all, thanks

We have a 2002 sm 74 and we run our press with the vario always on and have had no wear issues. You need to know that if your going to run with or without it on that the heidelberg manual has different settings for the rollers, with vario or without. This doesnt have to do with the bridge roller as you can turn that off and on at the console. The stripe to the ocsillator and form are heavy for vario and lighter for conventional.

Z roller disengages automatically when vario turned on.

Like I mentioned above I would save vary use for when its needed. Vario use is indicated when experiencing plate hickeys. Because the entire premise of the Vario system is to wipe plate hickeys off the plate by altering the surface speed of the water form roller in relation to the surface speed of the plate cylinder wear is going to happen to both the roller and the plate.
