Do any of you know of a reputable repair company that works on Heidelberg Speedmaster 74's in Ontario? We're about 1 hour from Toronto.

We have a 5 colour and a 4 colour, both of which have an intermittent scumming problem along the one side of the sheet. Heidelberg is saying it's the blanket cylinder bearings (which do seem to be sloppy), but we'd like a second opinion that replacing these will be the answer before we drop the mega bucks Heidelberg is quoting.

Ps. Neither of these presses have a chiller. Could this be contributing to the issue?

    Thanks

By the way, I can't see how scumming on one side (consistently) would have much to do with not having an inker chill system. Scumming on one side, intermittently, same side of image on both machines and all units?

    Thanks for the suggestion Junker.
And yes, same side of the press on all units/presses.

I hesitate to ask, it wouldn't be as simple as your plant heating duct work blowing along both presses?

The scumming can work its way all the way across the sheet (usually in about 0.5" chatter marks), but it manifests the most/first on the gear side. I'm fairly new to this plant, but apparently the pressmen (who are highly skilled/knowledgeable) have been fighting this for about 2 years.

It's not plant heat related, it's a year round problem even with AC. Seems to come and go - some days are worse than others.

Age of machines? Are you still using the self oscillating forms?

    printing problem

scrumming always happens when the water is warm, one time when the cooler failed I filled up 2 liter plastic pop bottles and froze them over night, about 16 of them, I put them in the water, and they help with keeping the water cold enough to run, till they got the chiller working. if you don,t have a chiller then try this and see if it helps

Thanks for the suggestions guys. We had a independent tech come in, he agrees with Heidelberg that the issue is cylinder bearings - however is confident he can get it repair for us for a much more reasonable rate, so we'll see how that goes.
