Your question is broad and far reaching although I can give you a topical overview of maintenance.

    1. In regards to the lifespan of each type of machine. It could be 1 year or 20 years, it depends on how you maintain the machine you have. In general an offset press is going to outlive a digital press as they are built on a more robust platform with steel side frames. But they are also both required to perform significantly different tasks. For either machine you need to follow the recommended maintenance schedules to get the most out of them. In my experience, a large portion of the service work performed on an offset press is directly related to lack of maintenance in two areas; lack of lubrication or use of non specified lubricants and lack of proper cleaning.

    2. The maintenance policy is typically clearly outlined in the documentation received with the equipment. Lubrication schedules, areas to clean, types of lubrication to use, filter replacement, etc. Take the time to do these tasks.

An Offset press can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, some even cost millions. An expensive luxury car is but a fraction of the cost, yet you would religiously take it in for service. A press is no different, it needs constant care and more than likely it is responsible for making the payments on the luxury car...

A good example of an offset press lifespan is Heidelberg KORD. This press is still running in many print shops around the world and it was first introduced in 1962.
