Why Heidelberg presses had two different blanket cylinder undercuts?

    aqazi,
not sure if they Heidelberg still makes them this way for euro distribution, but I do know that years ago the presses sold in Europe, came with a deep undercut on blanket cylinder to allow for running an under blanket. If i remember correctly it would take a 2ply under blanket that would clamp under the standard blanket only in the gripper clamp. I seem to remember hearing that the total height was high enough over bearer that the plate and blanket would roll belly to belly. Not sure I like the idea of belly to belly but the under blanket setup was resistant to smashes.

Mostly we have presses here from Europe and with 3.2 mm undercut, but the operating manual says, blanket should be below the bearer height, 0.05 mm if I remember correctly. Therefore printing on bearer pressure, not belly to belly.
