We recently upgraded to Ikon's CPP 550 and also received a new Fiery called the "Fiery X3eTY2 65_55C-KM". I am hating the fact that whenever someone prints they now have to choose the paper weight, otherwise the machine will error out. This never used to be an issue with our old fiery, and has resulted in someone calling me with questions daily. And a huge measurable lack in production.

Is there anyway to turn this feature off? I assumed it was called "Fiery doesn't care what paper weight is (on user computer) as long as it prints what it sees the copier has it set to". But that option wasn't available.

Isn't there an option to set Media Type to "Use Machine Settings"

There's an option to use "Printers Default" on the Ikon Konica 550, but it would only work if we use the same paper weight for all of our trays. This setting works fine for our Tray 1 which everyone uses and has no problems. But the other trays are set heavier types. Users will never change the paper weight located in tray 2, but since it is a heavier weight, selecting "Printer's Default aka 75-80 g/m2" will just make the machine error out.

I was hoping for a way to have the fiery not be so dogmatic on paper weights and just print the thing. Having a job stop just because it doesn't match what the machine says, has been a huge headache for me. I understand that we don't want machines printing fast on heavier weights, but for those of us that never change the weight, we shouldn't have to go in a select the paper weight each and every time we need to print to tray 2.

I can see copy shops needing this feature because so many people will print different media types/weights. For us though, this setting has really made my life hell as I should support tech issues such as exchange/database problems and not paper weight issues.

I called Ikon and they told me "Sorry that we forgot to tell you about that". Training has been a complete disaster, as people don't remember why their job gets a red flashing light saying error. Or when they do, they know they have to change the weight, but they just come get me because it's less thought process.

I've posted this question on another forum and the professional advice is: don't buy a copier for a business where people don't know paper weights.

So for those of you that are in charge of Technology. Do not buy the Ikon Konica 550/660 with the latest Fiery Pro80 or X3eTY2 or later.

Which is why I now use Xerox.

However in your case in your printer driver is a spot that starts as default but after you've configured paperweights you can click beside that spot and save the configuration by name. Next time just select the saved configuration and its ready to print. If you use 1 configuration most times you can go one step farther and select that configuration outside of any program via the printer folder by right clicking on preferences. Do that and its what the printer defaults to. I expect a Mac works quite close to the same.

Alternatively it is possible to set up multiple virtual printers so anyone selecting a printer gets a specific configuration as above.
