Hi there I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some advice on an issue I have with my OKI C9655.

When printing anything through the multipurpose tray all prints have a dirty background on there. This only happens when printing through the multipurpose tray. Printing through tray 1 the background is fine. Its only been happening over the last few weeks, and seems to slowly getting worse.

All consumables have plenty of life in them at the moment.

I have attached an image of the print (on the left), and what the card looks like prior to printing.

This is being printed on Xerox Colotech 300gsm, though the same problem happens on other stock including standard 80gsm.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    OKI C9655 grey background

    I have the same problem.
Changing a drum makes an improvement, changing all probably solves the problem.
Even if it says 80% life remaining, the drums are bad after ±1year. And my printer sits in a dark and cool room.
I'm looking for a way to clean them professionaly.
If you found another solution I would like to know this also.

hi there, drums are sensitive to sunlight, physical touch, damage by the wrong paper/staples etc. i would not advise cleaning them. The OPC (cylinder) in the drum is made up of layers of special coatings - if you touch it or clean it with something you can damage this. If you leave it in direct sunlight for ten minutes - it will get damaged. only ever use lint free cloth when touching things inside the printer...
does the backgrounding happen with all colours? i.e. if you print yellow text on the card only - do you get the backgrounding defect?

I only get a gray background with carton (I mainly use 250gr), and it's realy bad with glossy carton. I sometimes avoid this problem using a less smooth carton. I find it strange that brettsmason has it on 80gr.
This gray background also happens when I print just yellow, (or just cyan, or just magenta)
I changed some drums but the problem keeps comming back.
    Thanks toadman for the info.

    Hi chris
are you saying the backgrounding only happen when you use a certain type of paper /card?
If it does by process of elimination then your printer has an issue with this material. what happens when you print on normal paper? Drum issues are normally shown as lines or scratches repeating down the page.

    Thanks again for your help.
On paper (80gr) there's no background, on 150gr it's very slightly. I use commonly used carton. The background is a cloudy/marble effect.
My printer is 4 years old and did about 4000 prints (mainly A3).
I have this problem about 2 years now, so when it started I used my waranty and filed a complaint, so a technician came to my house and changed 1 drum (free), but this only was a temporary solution.
Maybe the drums get to exposed inside the printer, or it's just bad quality.
I would like to know if many people have this problem.

ok so i would say you need to try and work out what is causing the issue. Its a bit like being a detective.

It could be the paper type or a part not working correctly i.e. toner, drum, fuser or transfer belt.

it sounds like the printer or something in the printer does not like the paper.

are you using original drums / toner / fuser etc ?
do you change the settings when you print on different paper types?

I 've allways used original parts, and set the correct settings, but now I've noticed that when I print 250gr with a incorrect setting of ±200gr (I believe its called "ultra heavy2") I get a less gray background (on exactly the same carton). So the setting makes a difference. This is at least on step forward to keeping this printer going!

Hello all, just wondering if anyone found a solution to this problem. I print greetings cards and purchased an OKI C531DN which worked fine for quite some time. I also print party labels on A4 sheets of sticky labels. Then all of a sudden I started to see the grey marbled shading appearing, because I believed it to be a fault on that particular machine, I ordered another printer to continue printing for my business. Then I raised a concern with OKI support who suggested I purchased a new fuser, which I did, this didn't resolve the problem and cost as much as the replacement printer, which also then developed the same problem. So I now have two OKI printers that print this grey film when printing on card. So, I don't print greetings cards anymore, just labels, which isn't ideal, but until I can resolve the issue, I can't fulfil orders to the standard I would like. So ... today I noticed that the printer is now showing signs of printing the grey crap on basic A4 paper too??? Surely this isn't right. Anyone have any advice before I throw them through the windown ... ha ha

Your problem is the same as mine, did you find a solution or a new printer?

guys, I'd think that we need to look outside the box for this one,
Look at the background trough the magnifying glass, are all colors present within? if yes, than check these:
Humidity in the room, humidity of the cardstock.
Electric line printer plugs in to, is it dedicated? Any chance it is ancient wiring and carry "noise"? - get a filter, not a $6 power strip a real power filter if you think electricity may not be clean.
Let me know if these help.

I personally don't think it's any of those particularly issues, but glad someone answered :p

I have had 4 of these printers now and every single one has developed the same problem in a very short time. I have a small business and have to keep up with orders, so when the fault occurred I just ordered another printer.

Was actually thinking of getting a completely different printer, someone mentioned switching from 'laser' to the wax ones? A xerox phaser or similar. I wouldn't purchase another OKI everrrrr. But would love to know if the problem can be resolved.

If it were a cardstock issue, it would happen from first use, but it didn't for me, it happened over time and then got worse till I was unable to send out orders as they were way too messy.

So, I have 4 OKI printers that all print a grey marbled film when printing on cardstock and now I am seeing the same issue slowly appearing with copier paper.

I have replaced a fuser in one of the printer and this hasn't changed the issue. Yesterday, I cleaned the fuser and the drum belt.

I don't think it's a dirty component issue, might be a contaminated component problem, really not sure. But, I'm not putting them in the bin just yet, someone may come up with something.

Did anyone ever find a solution to this? My printer (also a C531DN) developed the same issue after installing some compatible carts so I presumed it was those, but the replacements didn't fix the problem. I assumed I'd damaged the printer by using cardstock, and stopped making cards altogether. But I've realised now that the issue isn't there at all when printing in greyscale o_O

And of course, I'm now 6 weeks out of warranty!!
