I'm new to this site and find it very informative.
I own a weekly newspaper and visitor guide on an island in the Caribbean.
I print on the mainland, and printing costs are killing me.
As I expand our business (looking at additional publications), I'm seriously thinking about getting my own press.
I started my journalism career as an assistant pressman running a four unit GOSS web press, I know that owning your own press (and support equipment) is a business in itself.
I'm not familiar with the latest technology on the printing side, and believe me, you won't find it in this country.

Do any of you have a recommendation for entering into the "print" side of a newspaper business in 3rd world country where tech support is limited, and the elements (i.e. salt air, hurricanes, sketchy power supply) can be brutal?

Currently we print about 5000 copies a week, tabloid, ranging from 32 pages in slow season to 80 pages (Christmas issue). We are doing more and more full color, with hopes of starting more full color periodicals.

    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

i don't think i would recommend taking it on in those conditions. i would outsource the newspaper printing to a company that will fill orders of that size.
