I have a small little newspaper that is currently contract printing. Not really happy with the quality and reliability of the current printer and am considering investing in a press. I have a couple basic and, I am sorry, naive questions to ask.

I am looking at a cheap 1977 Sanden press that has been out of service for a couple of years.

My first question is there parts and service still available for something that old.

The second question is this: How big of a pain in the "arse" is it to put a press that has been sitting back into service?

I would love to be able to plunk down a couple hundred thousand and get something really nice, but I won't. I am looking for a jaguar at a yugo price.

    Thank you for your time.

What kind of newspaper is it ?
    Size , pages , copies ?
This would be the starting point for any advise.

generally , if you do not have the cash to spare , i would not touch A PRESS THAT CAN NOT BE SEEN IN PRODUCTION.
if it sat for years so you are talking rollers , pipes , may be inkeys and much more..... cheaper not to touch it at all.

    talk to me

It's good go print by yourself, so you can control the quality. But, press is really costly. You're not going to control every step of press, right? from CTP, search paper mill, print, what about coating? UV, film lamination, varnishing, gold foil etc. If you don't have a lot to press, maybe it's better to just find another reliable printer.

If you are patient enough, look on eBay. You can pick up a nice, newer web for fairly cheap. They pop up all the time for the 30 to 50k mark.

Winslow, You have every printers dream of buying cheep and getting top quality out of what you buy. Even I dream of that. When investing in a newspaper press, it is easily overlooked what all problems you'll be faced with. First the cost of a cheep press may be a dream, but you still have to get it to your location. $20,000-50,000 is a cheep price" JUST FOR MOVING" and setting it up. You may manage to get lucky enough to get it printing with little cost. Your cheep price just went to around $100,000, and you don't have quality print yet. At best you should expect to spend a minimum of $150,000 just for starters. Depending on the number of pages your paper will be will determine the more or less which you should plan on investing into your project. Older machines should be able to run around 6-7000 an hour. Plan on at least a week to install and set-up machine.
