Just replaced the rollers in the main unit of my 665CD. Immediately we encounter a problem with gear streaks. Mechanic checks gears, all look fine. Checked through roller pressures and contacts, everything OK. Did the normal fixes-check chemistry, back off axilliury roller. Checked oscilators. Increased ink tack. Back head prints fine. Has to be in new rollers. Any ideas or suggestions?

Yes more than likey it's end play in the ink form rollers. You can take it up using the NOP side ink form eccentric adjustment. Just loosen the lock screw and tap the end collars in slightly. If you tap them in to far the rollers can bind. So check for that after and adjust as needed. Rollers vary slightly in length from OEM to LithoRoll to Syntac etc.....If you find form end play this is more than likely the problem.

BTW if your mechanic is a outside vendor he/she should have known/checked for the end play. That should be a freebie when they come back. Or at least to check that if it turns out to be something else.

Also the mechanic should check the form roller shafts for wear where they seat on the roller bearing. If end play is not the issue it could be worn shafts. Always dab a little grease/oil slurry on there when everything goes back together. Oil alone will wash off when color washes are done. Grease hangs on there a bit longer. All the form roller shafts should be monthly oil/greased to prevent premature wear. Drive gears as well and helps keep them quiet. Long ago Hamada briefly used a fish oil based grease from the factory instead of petrolium based. New machines were seizing roller gears left and right bad enough to stop the press or loosen the eccentric collars and it did 360's as the rollers turned. LOL. They are workhorse machines and run very well.

    Thanks FFR,

I have the mechanic coming back Monday a.m. I'll check for end play today. Cleaned out all gears with a toothbrush yesterday - didn't make a difference.

Mechanic is a good guy. He used to own the Hamada dealership that sold us the press 15 years ago.
I know he'll do right by us.

    Mike

Tech was back today. We removed main head, examined gears, and everything else. It is the new rollers. We decided the new water roller is undersized. NEw rollers coming next week. More info as it comes.

Probably your cylinder bearings are gone, when they are in bad shape they transfer the vibration to the cylinder and to the blanket leaning tracks in the same direction as the gears, try running some sheets thru printing a dry solid (with no water engaged) if the tracks are still there then your problem is your bearings

Thanks. The tech swopped out the whole Crestline unit with one he had in the shop. Still streaks. He replaced the bearing and shaft on the night latch. Still streaking. He tested the cylinder bearings and said they seemed fine. I'll try your method with a dry solid.

Had a similar problem, end up being the small drive belt. Make sure your belts are not loose or, if they are worn, replace.
