AB Dick 9840 Keeps Turning Itself Off

Our print shop is having problems with an AB Dick 9840 press machine. It comes on for a few minutes then turns itself off. Our part-time technician looked it over and suspects that it's a malfunction in the circuit board, as he noticed that a red light comes on when the press comes on, then blinks repeatedly before turning solid bright red just before the press stops (see attachment).

Any thoughts as to what exactly's wrong with the press and how much it might cost to repair it would be greatly appreciated!

First thing that comes to mind after reading this is possibly a cover/switch is loose. What I mean is, while running a cover is moving just enough to trigger the switch that will stop the press once it's lifted up. Pull off the big operators side cover and find the little white plug which is an override for all safety covers and pull it. Try running it that way and see if it still shuts off. If it doesn't shut off anymore, then you know you have a cover/switch that is causing the issue. Maybe you have already done this but figured I'd throw it out there just in case.

Who knew?? And all this time I thought the "AB" stood for "awfully big" (referring to the size a fellow would have to be in order to operate such a manly machine - ha!) So anyway, our technician did change out all the relay switches but he didn't change out the fuse (because he assumed that if the fuse was blown, it wouldn't come on at all instead of coming on then shutting off). But now that I think about it perhaps if only one of the two fuses works, there's enough power to turn it on, but not enough to keep it on so I'll have him change out the fuses just in case - thanks!

I don't think we've tried that yet either - thanks for the suggestion!

Replace 5 volt power supply. This symptom has been repaired by this replacement if the press shuts off and the counter is resetting. If your counter keeps the count it could be a safety cover as mentioned by dmblair. Take off the electrical box cover on the non-op side and pull the 2 white push buttons on the left side of box by the little shelf to by-pass safety feature. There are also other possibilities. The power supply from Presstek is over $300. You can shop around and get it for under $100 but you have to remove the wires from the old and solder onto the new. Are any codes showing up on the digital display such as HHHPPP?

Good morning and thanks for the suggestion. No, there are no codes showing up on the digital display. It just comes on for a minute or two, then shuts completely off. Sometimes when we try to turn it back on immediately, it beeps once, the display flashes, then it shuts off again immediately. Usually if we wait a minute before trying to restart the machine, then it will come back on for a couple of minutes before shutting off again.

Check if power supplies are over-heating they should be warm not being hot to the touch. Recommend power down when not in use, (unplug or turn circuit breaker off). Boards can be repaired.
